At H.I.P. Martial Arts we train not only our body but also our character. The teaching of Martial Arts is the vehicle by which life skills are taught. Life skills are what makes us better people and better able to interact with others in a positive and productive way.
Krav Maga is the hand-to-hand combat system of the Israeli military. Since its beginning it has become one of the best self defense systems in existence. It's techniques are taken from multiple martial arts and fighting systems and represent the most effective tactics for defense against unarmed and armed attackers.
Do you work alone or late at night? Do you travel for work or pleasure? Have you ever felt you might be assaulted? Do you have children and want to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they can defend themselves? This class begins with learning the idea of situational awareness (the awareness of your surroundings including who is there, where the exits are, what obstacles may get in the way of escape and what weapons of opportunity are available.
The ability to defend oneself when attacked is often the difference between life and death. Unfortunately we live in a dangerous world with people who would do us harm. In this class you will learn the ways in which attacks can happen and how to counter those attacks and escape. Using a variety of techniques you will learn to cause enough pain to the attacker to allow you to stop the attack and escape.
Children are not immune to attack and the need to defend themselves. This class begins with learning who is safe for a child to approach if alone and how to contact parents or guardians if lost. Your child will also learn basic techniques to stop or slow an attacker allowing the child to escape and or draw attention to the situation so others can intervene on the child's behalf.

We live in a time when we must always be aware of potential threats to our safety. According to the latest report from the University of Iowa Police in 2018 there were 31 rape, 41 fondling and 16 aggravated assault cases reported on campus alone. This number does not include reports of these crimes off campus in the surrounding community.
The 2017 Crime in the United States report from the Federal Bureau of Investigations states that, in the Iowa City/Coralville/North Liberty area there were 4 murders, 50 rapes, 69 robberies and 136 aggravated assaults reported.
What can we do to be as safe as possible as we go about our daily activities? We can bury our heads in the sand and make statements about how the people who commit these crimes should not do so and that we should be able to go where-ever we want whenever we want with other or alone and we should be safe. As a martial arts instructor and father of 4 I will tell you this is wishful thinking at best. While I agree that we SHOULD be able to do these things, the reality is that this is not possible in our society.
Understanding your environment and learning how to defend yourself are the best options to even come close to the ideals above. We cannot rely on everyone around us to be good people with no harmful intentions towards us or others. You do not need to become a practicing martial artist to learn basic self defense techniques including how to read your surroundings to identify potential risks to your safety and ways to escape as well as potential weapons with which you can defend yourself if needed.
